Today in the doctor’s office waiting room:
The drawing above is actually three separate drawings, these people were in different parts of the room.
The woman, above left sat in her chair quietly next to her fiftysomething son. There was a large pink satin ribbon tied to her walker. He was shaking a plastic bottle of white liquid as his mother looked at him with googley eyes. Then he handed it to her and said loudly “Drink all of this, it’s medicine.” She looked at him and said “Drink all of this?” He said yes. A man called her name and she didn’t seem to hear. Her son said “They are going to do the test now.” She said “They are going to do the test now?” She repeated everything he said. She said “Are you coming with me?” He said yes, she said yes.
The man in the lower right looked over and noticed I was drawing him so he put his arms up over his head, I guess to cover his face. Eventually he fell asleep and put his arms back down. He had large fleshy ears.
The couple on the upper right side of the drawing were reading the newspaper and discussing things, maybe the stuff in the newspaper. The woman had a brace on her neck and her torso. She spoke in a very faint raspy voice. When they called her he got up to go with her and the woman said he couldn’t come because there was no place for him to sit. He said “I’ll stand.” She said the room is too small, you’ll have to wait here. He said “I need to come with her, she needs my help.” The woman said “I’m sorry” and took his wife through the white door. In a minute or so she came back out and said he could come be with her in the dressing room.
Observed/Overheard in Nielsen’s Frozen Custard in Vienna, VA:
I did a drawing of this place but I don't like it. A youngish man sitting in the corner eating ice cream with a girl seemed to know everyone who walked in the door. I overheard him say he was “ traveling with the president.” I started paying closer attention, wondering if he’s talking about the president of Nielsen’s Frozen Custard, or maybe . . . , after all this is Washington. He said “I still get giddy when riding in the motorcade.” He went on to say that he is always amazed by what he is doing, “When I look at the Presidential Manifest and see my name on it I say to myself, "This is important, I have to save this.” When Toni came in she asked what I was writing and I told her, she said “You are such a nerd, he could be the president’s dog walker for all you know.” And your point is?
